Mobile App UI designing

With the advent of the smart-phone, the use of applications has grown from simply being used on computers and laptops to now being specifically designed for mobile phone users. The use of applications on mobile phones has grown to include nearly every aspect of daily life, ranging from apps that monitor your fitness level to apps that remind you to drink water. In this sense, mobile App UI designing is one of the most important aspects of creating mobile applications. This field considers all the features that could affect a good mobile application such as the screen size, device fragmentation, memory and storage features, battery life, etc. In order to ensure the success, maximum efficiency and user friendliness of the app, it has now become imperative to design applications keeping all these numerous factors in mind.

Some of the most important factors to be considered for mobile app UI designing are highlighted below:

1. Content Displayed

One of the most important factors to be considered when engaging with mobile app UI designing is how the content of the app is to be displayed. The content must be kept to a minimum so that users do not get confused or frustrated. Furthermore, the human mind can process limited amounts of information at a given time. Hence, the content being displayed on the small phone screen must be absolutely clear so as to make the processing of the information easier.

2. Conducting Research Before Designing

Knowing the kind of information that is required to be displayed as well as the audience it is going to be displayed to makes a huge difference in how the app can be designed. There may be other apps which are performing the same function and hence the designer must find ways of making their app stand out. Performing research can also help the designer decide alternative ways to make things easier for the user and hence make the app more user-friendly. It can also help designers more aware of which features they need to add or remove from the app, thereby, making it less cluttered.

3. Device Platforms

When mobile app UI designing is done, most of the designers consider the type of platform the app is going to be released on. As there are numerous platforms such as Android, BlackBerry, iOS, etc. on which the applications can be released, designers must see how best they can program, the application on not only one version/ platform but on others as well.

4. Navigation

While navigation on a desktop/laptop may be fairly simple, navigation on mobile apps pose a whole new challenge. Mobile app UI designing must consider the way the app will look on the screen, how best to place the buttons, links, etc. on the application and how to keep the focus on the immediate task. The navigation aspect is also greatly tied to the visual cues provided by the app. Thus, it is important to make certain important feature stand out or, in other words, give them visual weight-age as well as remaining visually consistent.

5. Division of Tasks

Some applications may require users to fill out a lot of data or fill out information multiple times. In such cases, it is better to divide the tasks at hand into clusters or chunks so that it does not seem like the application is asking for too much or will take a long time. Such a method will also be beneficial for the user as it may make the job of understanding the task easier. While dividing tasks, the designer may also realize means by which they can reduce the amount of information asked for or improve the way the user can fill in the information (auto-complete, short forms, etc.) and hence improve the experience of the app.

6. Familiarity

This is one of the key aspects when it comes to mobile app UI designing. While creating apps, many designers may be tempted to use fancy formats, buttons, text, etc. to increase the appeal and originality of the app. Although this may seem like a good idea, in this case, keeping it simple plays an important role. Using the universally accepted signs for features such as the search bar, for the home button, etc. is important as it makes it easier for the user to begin using the app; they do not require any new learning in order to interact in the most basic way with the app.

Mobile app designing is thus a complex task that required numerous factors to be kept in mind. We hope this article provides you with all the basic factors that need to be kept in mind and hence assists you in the creation of your mobile app.
